Belize cannabis and hemp legalisation bill faces opposition, late referendum

The fate of a recently approved cannabis and industrial hemp bill in Belize is likely to be decided by a national referendum after opposition groups submitted a petition in early May in an effort to block cannabis legalisation in the Central American nation.

Members of Belize’s National Assembly on 30th March voted in favour of the Cannabis and Industrial Hemp Control and Licensing Bill, which would legalise recreational cannabis use, establish a national nursery for seeds and cannabis plants, and create a Cannabis Control Commission to issue licences to authorised individuals or businesses to cultivate, consume, market, transport and distribute cannabis.
