A new Brazilian president is unlikely to free CBD from its legal chains

Prospects for CBD in Brazil – like so much else in the world’s fifth largest country – depend hugely on the outcome of the forthcoming presidential election, in which the far right-wing candidate Jair Bolsonaro has emerged as a very strong favourite.

As a hardcore conservative, Bolsonaro is unlikely to look favourably on CBD. And, indeed, he has tweeted that he has “always been against drugs and abortion”.

Bolsonaro’s likely victory may not be good news for those few projects hoping to establish CBD in Brazil, and may cause those foreign firms already investing in the country to think again.

In Brazil at present, CBD remains a tightly controlled medical product only really available to the rich. And there are already major bureaucratic obstacles to its market development.
